Soil pH and Analysis: How to Improve Your Turf Grass

Soil pH and Analysis: How to Improve Your Turf Grass on the green inc

The pH balance of your soil plays a crucial role in the health of your landscape, and finding the perfect pH balance is complicated.

Soil is a complex thing. We understand it needs nutrients to produce a lush yard or beautiful garden, but there is more to the process than just fertilization. The pH balance of your soil plays a crucial role in the health of your landscape, and finding the perfect pH balance may be a little too complicated for an average homeowner. Fortunately, with a bit of guidance from On The Green Inc, you can test your soil’s pH and ensure your turf grass is healthy. Keep reading to learn more.

What is Soil pH?

pH is the measure of acidity or alkalinity in your soil on a scale of 0-14. The closer to 0, the more acidic the soil is. The closer the pH is to 14, the more alkaline it is. A pH of 7 is neutral, meaning it is a perfect balance of acidic and alkaline. Soil pH may seem simple on the surface, but it plays a significant role in the health of your grass or plants.

The Importance of PH Levels

PH determines how soil absorbs nutrients and water. If you do not have the proper PH level for your lawn, most of the nutrients in lawn fertilizers go to waste because the soil cannot absorb them. A lawn cannot thrive without the necessary nutrients, so the soil’s PH is important to measure. Understanding the PH of your property will guide you on which nutrients the soil needs. It will also help you determine how much fertilizer and nutrients to apply to the lawn.

Increasing PH of Acidic Soil

Applying a lime solution effectively reduces soil acidity in a lawn. The amount of lime applied depends on the nature of the soil and its ability to absorb the lime. Soil with high levels of clay content is less likely to absorb lime, so more lime is needed in such a case. If the soil pH is very low, two applications of heavy lime are recommended spaced at least four weeks apart.

At On The Green Inc, we perform soil analyses on landscapes to test the pH of the soil and treat it with the proper nutrients to adjust the pH levels.

Reducing the PH of Alkaline Soil

Acidity in the soil can be increased by adding sulfur to the soil. Sulfur oxidizes into sulfuric acid. Sulfur also works with nitrogen to produce new proteins for plant growth. It plays an important role in the utilization of oxygen by the plant and influences the level of activity of soil microorganisms.

Your soil is often an overlooked part of your lawn’s health, but the truth is that it supports its growing life.
