Mosquito Control- How to Protect Yourself

Mosquito Control- How to Protect Yourself

Spending time outdoors enjoying your landscape can quickly become a nightmare if pesky mosquitoes swarm you

Spending time outdoors enjoying your landscape can quickly become a nightmare if pesky mosquitoes swarm you. If you spend any time outside, they are bound to flutter around you until they get to your skin. However, mosquitos aren’t always detectable; they can bite you without you seeing or feeling it. But, you will notice the itchy marks they’ll leave on your body. Fortunately, you can take steps to protect your family and property from mosquitoes.

Why Do Mosquitoes Bite?

It may surprise many people to hear that mosquitoes don’t bite humans to sustain themselves by drinking our blood. In actuality, only the female mosquito draws blood from animals, and she does so solely to receive the proper nutrients to facilitate the breeding process. Mosquitoes can remain active as long as temperatures stay above 50 degrees Fahrenheit, so it is important to be aware of your surroundings while outside for most of the year.

How to Rid Your Yard of Mosquitoes

Here are a few helpful ways to prevent the breeding and infestation of mosquitoes.

Get Rid of Standing Water

It is known that mosquitoes lay water in eggs, so any stagnant water is the ideal breeding ground for them. Mosquito eggs will turn into adults in 8-10 days. Cover or pour water out of your gutters, dog bowls, birdbaths, pools, and anywhere else it can accumulate.

Clear Your Yard of Debris

Mosquitoes love to hide in warm, dark places on your property. Clearing debris is a great step to ensure any subsequent chemical treatment you use sticks. Old tires are often the biggest culprit. Tires not only hold water but offer warm shelter for mosquitoes. If you do not want your home to be the ultimate breeding ground for mosquitoes, get rid of the junk items. After a rainstorm, check those small items that store water.

Invest in a Lawn Treatment Program

If your mosquito problem persists even after clearing out standing water, you can try a lawn treatment program in shaded areas with long grass and shrubs or areas with heavy foot traffic.

Identify the parts of your lawn that are known to accumulate water. You can cover these poorly drained areas in your yard with a layer of stones or topsoil. If you are looking for an effective pest control treatment or a second opinion on the source of your mosquito problems, reach out to your local mosquito exterminators.
